The Hayes Family in Chicago

With last weeks episode of Who Do You Think You Are, featuring Sean Hayes, I have spent some time doing research on the family. This episode did not really show us a family tree and there are plenty of records on the Hayes family in Chicago.

William F. Hayes married Barbara Anna Duy on 14 May 1935 in Chicago, Cook, IL.1 They had at least three children according to census records.

William (born 1912) is son of Patrick Hayes Jr (born 1881) and Jennie (or Jane) Carmody (born 1880), both native of Ireland. Patrick and Jennie married on 21 Sep 1904 in Chicago, Cook, IL.2 According to census records they both immigrated in 1900.3

Patrick and Jennie had the following children:

  1. Peter (8 Apr 1905 – 5 Mar 1979)4
  2. Loretta born about 1907
  3. John born about 1910
  4. William (1912 – 16 Nov 1951)5
  5. Francis (27 Nov 1914 – 14 Mar 1979)6
  6. Marcella born about 1918
  7. Mary born about 1920

The 1910 Census tells us that Patrick and Jennie had been married for five years and that Jennie gave birth to four children, with three of them living. No documents of the child’s birth or death have been found.

You can see that the Hayes family is by no means a small one and there should be many cousins out there for Sean. Stay tuned for another post about the Hayes family in Ireland.

  1. My tree on Ancestry has a lot of information for Sean. Loretta is my paternal grandmother. Sean and I are second cousins.

    1. Vicki,

Did you know that before the show? Or was it something you learned during? That is very cool. To be honest, when I watched I never expected to start researching the Hayes family. I just knew there was so much more information available that had not been shared during the show.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. I truly appreciate it.

      1. Hi Terri,

        Love your website.

I knew it before hand. The producer’s actually contacted another cousin and I for research information and family stories.

I didn’t have some of the documents they showed but it was awesome to learn that the family stories passed down were true.

I am hoping to sometime meet with Sean and share other information.

        Take care,

        Vicki

        1. Vicki,

That would be so exciting to be able to meet and share more information with him. Its too bad the show did not bring the families together. Though I assume that could prove to be awkward since he is estranged from his father.

I do have at least one more post going up about the family in Ireland. Though I am contemplating another one about more extended family.

Thanks again for visiting and commenting.

  2. After my mom and I watched the show I started to do some more research. Patrick and Jennie had a daughter Marcella who is my maternal grandmother and passed away when my mom was 6 years old, 1949 or 1950. My grandparents, Marcella and Joseph had 5 children before my grandmother’s passing. My grandmother is buried at Queen of Heaven. Marcella had a cousin, Patrick J. Hayes, who was a pastor at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Fr. Hayes was issued one of the title of Monsignor. He had a sister, Marie Perpetua Hayes, who was a member of the Sisterhood. Sister Marie Hayes past away at the age of 81 in 1985. I will continue to post additional family tree information.

    1. Renee,

Thank you for reading and commenting. I have to ask you the same question I asked Vicki. Did you know you were related to Sean before the show?

Thank you so much for sharing some of the family information with me and my readers. I appreciate it. It gives us just a bit more knowledge on the family!

      1. Hi Terri,
No not before the show. I knew there was alot of history surrounding the Hayes family based on stories I heard from my mom through the years. After my grandmother’s passing and through the years family contacts were lost.

        1. I do hope that the show becomes a tool to help the family heal on all avenues. My family has many issues and the biggest thing I have learned is that our family history is why we are who we are. We need to look at the lives of our ancestors to learn why they act they way they do. We do not have to deal with them on a day to day basis, but we will learn to understand who they are. This goes for current family members and those that have passed on.

  3. Vicki,
Mary the youngest child of Patrick and Jennie was a nurse at St. Ann’s who delivered my mother. From stories that I heard Loretta, your paternal grandmother was a phone operator in Park Ridge. (?)
I am so glad to have found this website!

  4. My dad was born in cook county Chicago Illinois sept 28 1953 as Timothy Hayes to birth parents Peter J Hayes and Agnes Banning . He was adopted at birth and moved to NY . Does any of this information sound familiar ?

    1. Samantha, unfortunately I have not completed any extensive research on the Hayes family. I only looked at the records pertaining to Sean’s family that they did not show on WDYTYA?.
